Coastal Living

Stefania Bianchi 40 – Italian/Swiss

I first visited Kenya in 2019 for a holiday, but immediately I understood it was not enough; Africa was calling me from the deep. This place stole my heart from the first moment. The colors, the nature, the ocean, the people… Everything here has elevated vibes. Watamu was a destination for 10 days, but after 5 years, it has become “HOME”. I’m from Switzerland, but since 2020, I have been living in Watamu for 6 months per year. I manage a small volunteering project called Semi di Baobab, which aims to help children and people in difficult situations, trying not to change their habits.

Actually, since I’ve been living here, it’s my life that has really changed. I value the little things more and appreciate what I have. Living here is not always easy, but when you find the right way to mix European and African styles, you are done. A mix of emotions fills the days. A mix of experiences fills your heart. With my project, I have visited many rural areas, and what is possible to discover is unbelievable. I’m not used to living the “funny coast life” here. Anyway, Watamu offers a lot of things to do. Just come and see for yourself. Karibu Kenya.

Living on the Kenyan coast has been truly a vibe. I love the people, the nature and the life style. Pole Pole is something I needed to integrate into my busy life when I arrived but after all it makes me happier than rushing around like in Europe. I’m based in Lamu though I have to say, I’m totally in love also with Watamu and Kilifi and like to travel there regularly. They are all different but so magnificent in their own way.

I have been living in Watamu almost one year. It is a special place where time seems to have stood still in many ways. As challenging as this can be it is also a blessing regarding to where I am coming from. I was immediately won over by the charm of this village even though people sometimes seem to talk a little too much about each other. I know this from Port Antonio, Jamaica, which I called my home over many years. New time, new home.
